la dolce vita, first week of September
It was a busy Sweetwater week for me.
First day of the month was this kid I had seen at open mic on Monday - Max Cabello Jr. - he looked like a random construction worker, but turned out to be a rippin good Stevie Ray Vaughn-ish, bring the house down with his technique kind of player, with a really good bass player and drummer. Where did these guys come from?
Saturday night was Storm And Her Balls. I have seen Storm almost every time she's been here over the last ten years from back in the days of Storm and Her Dirty Mouth. Back then she was a hard rocker, but now she's moved to Portland, got herself some new boobs (which she wears quite well!), and is fronting a lounge-core band. The band is good, but I find the overall Storm experience a little less satisfying each time I see the new band, and I've come to find her rock star ways quite off-putting, I think this may be it for me and Storm.
Sunday night was the Mark Karan Band. They try to get a good show on the Sunday night of a three-day weekend, and this one was fun. This was the Night of the Living Deadheads. Karan is the guitar player for Ratdog, which is one of those Dead spinoff bands and which is much-beloved in our little community where closet dead-heads are everywhere. Ratdog played at the Sausalito Art Festival on Saturday, and many people I know went and re-lived their drug-soaked younger days, and god bless 'em for it! So anyway, Mark and his band came in on a real high, and a good psychedelic, twirly-dancin' time was had by all.
And finally, on Tuesday night was good old Eugene of the Eugene Huggins Blues Band. It was First Tuesday, which means all the local art galleries were open and any business that feels like it can slap some pictures on the wall and put out wine and cheese and party down. I did the art cruise, then ended up spending about three hours hanging out and drinking cheap wine at the bike shop before I wandered over to Sweetwater. So that made me a happy dancer, and when you are a happy dancer, the chicks will come!
