the Gospel Hummingbirds and more
Much of this month has been a vast desert of nothingness music-wise for me. But last Saturday, it became a great month because of the Gospel Hummingbirds, who were so good I can hardly describe it. I guess they are Oakland based now, but their roots are in the Delta - the Sacramento delta that is. The main dudes are from Vallejo and Fairfield, and have been doing the gospel thing for over thirty years. Their voices were pure and every member of their band was very able - from the offensive tackle bass player to the lone white boy keyboard, to the Funkadelic guitar player that blew my doors off. But what set them apart was the JOY, the pure I'm talkin to God happiness that they brought to the room. The Holy Spirit was in da house that night!
This Wednesday was pretty fun also - a guy named Carl Verheyen, who was they say, the lead guitarist from Supertramp! They were your basic power guitar trio, complete with major volume and big sweeping stadium-ready gestures so you could tell they were gettin' down from the upper deck (kind of superfluous in the little ole Sweetwater). But their music was quirky and interesting and my friend Regina came out and danced with me, so it was all good.
