going to the desert...
There are many reasons why people go to the desert, some of which are not easily explained.
This excellent quote got me off my butt to refurbish my web site, which was getting pretty tired. This gave me that little nugget of good feeling that you get when you re-arrange the furniture, pick up, dust, and vacuum (which I also need to do!). I have not (yet) actually read the book of this quote - The Black Rock Desert. Rather, this was the introductory quote of The Big Silence by Bernard Schopen.
This book is so perfect for me that I am already sad about finishing it and I'm not yet a third of the way through (how dumb is that??). It combines my long-standing love of detective stories and my new-found thing of devouring all things Nevadan. Our protagonist Jack Ross lives in 1980's Reno, and is a classic noir hero, he drinks to much (because he has so much to forget of course), he takes cases from vulnerable women that nearly get him killed, he seems to have all the money he needs even though he never makes any in the books, he stands up to power just because it's power, quotes poetry...
